About the Book
I purchased a used book called Now Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham. It is a terrific book for anyone who wants to find out more about themselves or for people working in human resources. (If you are interested in similar Free personality tests, take a look at the Big 5 Tests and various Jung Tests on SimilarMinds.com.)
Disappointing Surprise
I really enjoyed this book and didn’t hesitate to buy it because I loved the first book co-authored by Marcus Buckingham called First, Break All the Rules. The one thing that really disappointed me though was that the Strengths Finder test can only be taken once. That meant that since the person who originally bought the book took the test, I could not take the same test! Half of the book requires that the reader take the test. Nowhere does it say, “Warning, this book is completely useless unless you take the test. Do not buy this used!” No, I found out half way through the book. To the authors and publishers of this book, STOP being so greedy. People will pay to take the test, but don’t make them purchase the entire book! Ok. Thanks for letting me get that out.
Email from LeadershipNow
I emailed leadershipnow.com and this is the response I received:
Joey,
Six of our strengths-related books include a single-use Clifton StrengthsFinder access code – part of the value to the original purchaser. But in choosing a used book, even one in “new condition,” the buyer must understand that their savings is due not only to the fact that the book has been read, but also that the single-use access code has been used and is no longer valid.
The StrengthsFinder program, assessment, and website are the product of more than four decades of research and a multimillion-dollar R&D project. To ensure the quality and consistency of the StrengthsFinder message — and for the website to be personalized around your top five themes — one access code is included with the purchase of each strengths-based book, and access codes are not sold separately. To obtain an unused code, please consider purchasing a new copy of this or another of our books which include an access code:
– StrengthsFinder 2.0 (2007) – Our most highly recommended book, this is the newest book in the StrengthsFinder series, and the only one which provides access to the latest version of the assessment. While there are few changes to the assessment itself, you’ll receive your results in an exciting new personalized report. For more information on other advantages of StrengthsFinder 2.0, visit http://sf2.strengthsfinder.com/content/26014/Discover-2.0.aspx
– Now, Discover Your Strengths (2001) – The classic book that introduced the Clifton StrengthsFinder to the public. Written to help you uncover, understand and utilize your own unique talents.
– Living Your Strengths (2004) – Teaches you to identify and affirm your talents, as well as how to use them for growth and service. Great information for church congregations that want to help their members become more involved and engaged.
– Teach With Your Strengths (2005) – Helps teachers put their strengths to use and become the best teachers they can be.
– Discover Your Sales Strengths (2003) – By knowing and focusing on their strengths, sales professionals can excel and profit.
– How Full is Your Bucket (2004) – A small gem of a book that demonstrates how even the briefest interactions affect your relationships, productivity, health, and longevity.
The books are quite reasonably priced, are widely available in local bookstores and online booksellers, and represent a valuable investment in yourself. Be sure to buy a new copy, as the access code in each book provides the original purchaser a single opportunity to take the Clifton StrengthsFinder. My Homegrown Solution
After feeling very frustrated, I decided to take some other tests to get an idea of my personality type according to other long-standing methods such as the Big 5 and the Jung/Myers Briggs tests. After doing multiple types of personality tests, I have found that there are some “self-reporting” tests where the assumptions is that the test-taker can best decide which category they fit into instead of using testing methods to “figure out” which categories they fit into. If you’re honest with yourself, you can achieve accurate results by self-reporting. If you can’t be honest with yourself, you’ll have to get “tricked” into choosing the honest answer through traditional testing methods where they ask the same question many different ways in order to find the most accurate answer. If you can’t be honest with the way you answer the questions, then that requires you to purchase the book to take the Strengths Finder Test.
So lets assume that you can be honest with yourself and choose to do the self-reporting method. What you’ll need to do is go through the list of themes and rate yourself from 1-10 based on how much you relate to the description.
Summary of Talent Themes
Here are summarized descriptions of the 34 talent themes found on Strengthstest.com. If you need more detailed descriptions, you can find full page descriptions as well as examples in your book:

Quick Self-Reporting Test
Now that you know what the 34 themes are, you can now rate yourself based on how much you associate with each talent theme. *When rating, use at least 1 decimal place. For example, it is better to write 9.5 rather than rounding up to 10. This will help when you are trying to determine your top 5 themes since you might have more than 5 themes that score equally high. In these cases, being as precise as possible with your rating will help break ties.

Top 5 Talent Themes
Look at which categories you rated highest. Pick the top 5. You should now have your top 5 talent themes! Now you can read the rest of the book without being completely lost. If you lost the original code, want to retake the test, or purchased a used book like I did, you might want to re-purchase the book so you can take the test. I am not sure whether the Strengths Finder Test would yield better results than self-reporting. I don’t know, I am not a professional. But based on common sense, it seems like any relatively intelligent person could figure out which talent themes they associate with most.

Thanks for the laughs everyone. ? - Wild Woman Fundraising » Blog Archive » How can you discover your strengths? on August 5th, 2010 3:56 am […] Do you recognize yourself in several of these descriptions? Do you want to learn more? If you buy the book, they will give you an access code to take this test online and find which strengths describe you best. This access code only works once, however, so don’t buy this book used. There’s a reason it’s on sale for 1 penny on Amazon used. You really need the access code to get the most out of the book. Go to Bookfinder and find the cheapest new book you can. This totally made my day! Cheers folks! Have another free code on me! ?
- AGO on October 15th, 2010 1:24 pm I had the same problem with my book, code had already been used. Here's my problem with the book: let's say you are already Introspective and you know what your strengths are–maybe the book just gave you a different word to use or perhaps you found your fifth strength. The entire book focuses on NOT worrying about your weaknesses, but instead focusing on your strengths. So, you find out what your strengths are, those strengths are explained, but then, right when you are ready for the 'what now' the book tells you to play to your strengths by avoiding your weaknesses. Yes, I know. You already told me that. I was hoping for more of a 'here's YOUR personal strengths and they work together like this.' Yes, I know that there are 30 some million combinations, so I wouldn't expect a personalized report, per se, but more of a guideline as to what certain strengths look like when paired together. Yes, there is a 3-5 page section at the end that does that, but 3-5 pages, that's all? I found the book interesting, but I already knew my strengths and have long avoided the areas I am not good at, and really wanted a more specific summary. Overall, good book for those trying to find out about themselves.
- robyn on November 14th, 2010 5:58 pm Thank you so much for brightening up my Monday morning – best comments Ive read – Crabitha brilliant – well done.

- Paul on December 16th, 2010 11:01 am I have the books Now Discover Your Strengths and Go Put Your Strengths to work, I am able to log into the book tools portion of the website but have never been able to access the tests- [email protected]
- Guest on January 6th, 2011 6:13 pm BTW speaking of scam… from the comments on Amazon:[O]nce I completed the online test and obtained the resultant reports, I was shocked to learn that I would only get the Top 5 Themes, and the other 29 remain a mystery. Upon contacting the company, I learned that for an additional $550.00 I could then obtain the other 29 themes, as well as their order of ranking.

- Pony Shaver on January 30th, 2011 1:06 am I was looking for information on the Strengths-Finder test mentioned in a magazine article when I came across this site. Thanks, Joey, for all the helpful information in your excellent article.I also read all of the comments and a lot of them were very helpful too, as this is the first good belly buster laugh I have had in a long time.Special thanks so much to Crabitha's pony for the free code. It didn't work yet, but I will keep trying. You are very excitingly, too. So much fun shaving to find the tattoo, I have never had so much happy. ?

- Marcy on February 17th, 2011 1:59 am YOU ROCK! Thank you for creating this page. I picked up Marcus Buckingham's book, Go Put your strengths to work, last night and stopped to take the strengths test. I borrowed the book from the library and quickly found out I would not be able to take the test as the code had already been used.
Isn't it amazing how quickly we've gotten used to this world of sharing information as the norm rather than the exception? It speaks volume's about the author, Gallup and their strategy for success. I'm returning the book to the library – unread. There are too many great books that are in tune with today's trends and strategies. - flowers on February 17th, 2011 9:06 am These comments are indeed prize winning! I am laughing my ass off! and yes I did read the article…. sweet.Just BUY the book, or go away!

- @active_voices on March 14th, 2011 12:11 pm Oh, too funny. It's so hard to get any work done these days. Really. @Paul – ingenious code! and @Crabitha – I want a pony, too!!I did this survey a couple of years ago, and now this book (Strengths Finder) is on my desk ALWAYS, especially when I'm stressed out or feeling down about my job. It's important to stay focused on what you can do well. We know what we're not good at. We do what we can to compensate for our weaknesses. But it's so much more productive to really let our strengths shine. My suggestion to y'all is to mark up your book when you get your survey results back. That has been very meaningful to me, even over time (although, I felt that the results were good to begin with). It's been 3.5 years since I took it, and the results seem to be more accurate now than they were originally.Good luck! And, if anybody's got that free pony, let me know!
- DaddyWarbucks on March 15th, 2011 1:55 pm My wife is in the other room hoping I stop laughing before the kids wake up. Great article, but by far the funniest comment thread I have ever read.

- RichardStep on July 25th, 2011 7:05 pm Thank you very much for this article. I did the exact same thing… only I think I beat my head against the wall in response to finding out I couldn't take the test. I did some googling to see what was going down and low and behold – we were all cheated. *sigh*And then your site hit my screen – I did the test and got some good results. It also inspired me to go a bit further… and make my own free online version of the Strengths Finder test!No Access Code needed, folks – let Clifton keep their money. ? http://richardstep.com/2011/07/20/strengths-finde…Thanks again for kicking me into action on this!
- axel on August 3rd, 2011 5:54 pm Although you have provided the 34 strengths and definition, WARNING – you might be missing the point. After reading a library copy I too created a similar test. I picked what I thought were my top 5. Upon taking the test I missed all 5. It would be easy to dismiss my results, but what I learned was I was still enamored by my weaknesses. I am glad I took the test. It has been about fruitful 8 months and countless insights later.
- jose on August 8th, 2011 9:19 am WTF. i answered 50 questions clicked submit and the page was not found. oh well.
- Rex on August 25th, 2011 4:23 pm I'm late to the game. Are you aware the Gallup is a business? The assessment is called Intellectual Property. We also have copy right laws to protect those who come up with great ideas from those who are lazy stealing them. If you are a believer…. You should respect the property of others. Thou shalt not steal… remember? You have posted they intellectual property on your site and although you list the trademark the law permits you to post 50 words before you need written permission.$12 is dirt cheap to get this kind of insight on yourself. – Grow up!!
- mrunsheeple on August 29th, 2011 2:13 pm Are you kidding? I wrote this article. I don't make a penny off of this! It actually costs me money to keep this domain and hosting. You're right about Gallup being a business. I own a business. I don't have a problem with them making money, but I did have a problem with their response to my email and the way they are handling the tests. They should be up front about the fact that there is only one test per book right on the cover or beginning of the book. Why let someone find out when they're more than half way through? What a waste of time. I wouldn't be surprised if someone sued them for that.Rex, it sounds like you work for Gallup. Do you?
- Ashley on September 4th, 2011 2:56 am The reason buying to code without the book is more expensive than buying a “new” book on amazon or half.com, etc., is because when you buy a book listed as “brand new” from those sites, there’s no guarantee that someone hasn’t used the code.I bought my “brand new” book online, listing said they never even opened it. Indeed the condition of the book was new, but when I tried to use the code, said it was already used.I am seriously upset. This book was supposed to be new. Completely useless. You have to buy it from Clifton to ensure you get a code. Or just buy the code. What a mess.
- Chrissy on September 10th, 2011 6:41 pm Posts were certainly entertaining. Kudos to the author of this article- well done!!For those motivated individuals that want a code:
You could buy a visa (etc.) credit card at a local store (walmart, rite aid, duane reade, etc) to purchase the book online. Then take the code and return the book :). Don't forget to open the envelope containing the code carefully and glue it back closed neatly! Stick it to the man! Cheers! - Graham on September 12th, 2011 7:51 am Thanks for summarising an interesting tool. A valuable part of your article (other than the amusing comments thread ) is your comments on the ability (or not ) of individuals to be honest about their responses. For those who can't, they have to realise that putting a test / assessment tool into a book is just another form of marketing. The value of all tests / assessments is not report, but the interpretation of the report and the follow up action. This is hard to do objectively on your own, with or without a book.

- kittypuke on October 12th, 2011 6:52 pm I can't help but wonder how many of those requesting a free code are actually PhDs…
- Wonderer on December 18th, 2011 7:51 pm Did any commenter here actually download or use the PDF 'Strengths Finder Self-Reporting Test' scoresheet offered on first page here? And not quickly discover — that it erroneously omits one of the 34 categories — 'Analytical'.
If that theme is one of your strengths, then you may have already discovered the omission. But then, also wondered about the lack of comments, or correction, in the two years since.
And now, oh Analytical One, are you possibly '…searching for reasons and causes . . .?
Just curious. Just saying. - Rl on December 30th, 2011 6:28 am Thank you for your wonderful book! And thanks for sending over the codes. They were very helpful. Could you send me a rainbow?

- AAA on March 2nd, 2012 3:16 pm thank you
- Reuphillan on March 7th, 2012 2:22 am WOW! The comments are amazing. Obviously reading is not some people's strength… dont worry, you dont need to focus on it, or maybe you should! On a more serious note – one of the better books and assessments I've had the pleasure of using. In fact, I really like it so much, I ordered a copy for every single person in our service line a few years ago (as part of a learning and development initiative), and most people found that the strengths that they have, although some may have known about one or two was not surprising, but something they just had not considered in the context.
Today, I have my own business and I ask all new employees to read the book (we even have an audio version for those who might belong to the group of non-readers above).
So my comment is to those who believe that they know their specific strengths – get a new version of the book and do the assessment. The report is a lot better than the descriptions in the book.Markus Buckingham / Gallop – perhaps you could consider selling a '2nd hand purchasers' code on-site. Perhaps at 1/2 price? Surely the recycling of such great books should be encouraged and we do understand that the research that went into the book is expensive, but 50% of double, triple your new book sales on the test must be worth considering. <smile> - foo foo on April 12th, 2012 8:52 pm
- Chris on April 24th, 2012 6:29 am Please send me a free access code @ [email protected]. Thanks
- respiton on April 25th, 2012 8:57 am wow i must say reading these post I should copy them and submitt them to comedy central what a hoot
- FreeCode4Me on May 2nd, 2012 10:17 pm While this can be helpful, you really need to do the test to get some 'real' results. A key idea not posted, is that a strength is something that energizes you. In other material Markus talks about thinking about the things that energize you the most. If you relate them to the list you will be closer to discovering your strengths.
- strengthsCoach on May 2nd, 2012 10:23 pm You get more of a report like that when you do the test, however having a strength coach to help you process the information and then help you plan strageties to manage weakness.
As you say there are millions of combinations, and they work a bit differently in each person based on various factors, such as culture /family / religious background, so having someone help you understand it for you personally is definitely worth it. - resourceful on May 4th, 2012 6:29 am I went here for a free strengths and weakness aptitude test: http://richardstep.com/self-tests-quizzes/strengt…Not the original, but close enough for me. ?
